DE- 007 The Neon Judgement – Early Tapes LP

Dark Entries has dug deep into the early days of the Belgian cassette scene to release two tapes by The Neon Judgment in the form of one vinyl LP for the first time ever! These pioneers of underground electronic music hail from the small town of Leuven near Brussels, Belgium and gave birth to the New Beat and EBM scenes worldwide in 1981/2 with the release of their first two cassettes–neatly compiled here as Early Tapes. Always a consistent duo of Dirk Da Davo (synthesizers, vocals) and TB Frank (guitar, drum machine, vocals) The Neon Judgment worked in a parallel world alongside Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, and the Deutsche Neue Welle recording under the watchful eyes of Roland Beelen (Antler-Subway) & Ludo Camerberlin (A Blaze Colour).

Arriving just in time to celebrate the Neon Judgment’s 30th anniversary, Early Tapes showcases the band’s brash and seedy lyrics, with raw synth stabs and repetitive drum machine beats adding to this rhythmic discourse. The result is a combination of lo-fi technology and emotional sincerity to create a sound both warm yet alienating that has stood the test of time and 30 years later, still evokes the same magic. The 10 songs on this LP were remastered from the original cassette masters resulting in a cohesive, gritty, maniacal dance program that sounds more relevant today than ever. Each sleeve is hand numbered in limited edition copies of 500 with an 11×11 lyric sheet including rare photos, a mini poster and two silk screened die-cut diagrams taken from the band’s original synthesizer workbooks.

DE- 005     Those Attractive Magnets – Electromagnetic Pulse LP

Those Attractive Magnets were created early 1980 in a town called Tamworth, the heart of the English Midlands, as a vehicle for Rikk Quay (keyboards) and Andy Baldwin (vocals). They self-released a super limited cassette EP, Pictures on the Wall in 1980 and the Nightlife/Love Chimes 7″ in 1983 and appeared on a Futurist music compilation LP, Synthetic Romance in 1982.
Their music travels beyond copycat synthpop bands of the time into electronic realms of the 80s underground scene. There are some obvious parallels of the time – you can hear the commercial strains of The Human League, Soft Cell and Kraftwerk at times – but the band never wholly embraced commercialism as these tracks reveal. Although their sound takes a cue from the post-punk and early new romantic scenes, it still remains one step ahead in a unique futuristic world full of delicious dance beats!
Electromagnetic Pulse is the first ever compilation of a number of tapes Those Attractive Magnets produced during their three creative and prolific years of song writing, 1980-1983. This LP contains remastered versions of both songs from the 7″ as well as 2 songs from the cassette EP and a different version of the song that appeared on Synthetic Romance; 9 songs in total, 7 of which have never appeared on vinyl until now! Limited to 500 hand-numbered copies with an 11×17 poster/insert of lyrics, photos and liner notes by Sam Holliday.

DE- 006 Dark Day – Window LP

Dark Day was the brainchild of Robin Crutchfield  formed after leaving New York’s seminal No Wave band, DNA. Following the first few incarnations and various lineups, 1981 saw the direction of the project morphed into an electronic keyboard duo where Robin was joined by Bill Sack. Together they recorded an album of nine songs entitled Window that was released on Plexus Records. Lyrics were inspired by various sources including occult texts by Colin Wilson and art by Leger, Bruegel, Malevich, Man Ray, Duchamp and Jean Cocteau. The mechanized sound of Window is less one of the man machine robots in charge of Kraftwerk than man at the mercy of his machines. The infectiously-engaging toy-like instruments captured the ears of fans worldwide with popcorn drum rhythms. A Synare borrowed from Jeff and Jane Hudson lent a “Bette Davis Eyes” crack to the percussion on the percolating tracks. The instant polaroid images, an homage to Japanese recording artist Susan of “The Girl Can’t Help It,” adorned the album sleeve in two stark headshots of musicians at work, haunted by the unseen. The front cover, a Crutchfield-designed collage in two tones of salmon flesh and Mediterranean watery blue show a string of rickety children in diaper togs, forced much like the children of “Cat In The Hat” to spend a dreary day indoors. The look on the children’s faces asks you to determine whether they are needing to be rescued from their enclosure, or inviting you to join and play. Is the window something you look out, or in? You must answer that question.
Carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and limited to 500 hand-numbered copies. This re-issue also includes a 24-page newsprint zine “Darker Days As I Recall Them” by Robin Crutchfield with silk screened cardstock jackets and an 8×11 lyrics sheet with song meanings and reflections from Robin Crutchfield and Bill Sack on the making of Window!

DE-004 Zwischenfall – Heute 12″ EP

Zwischenfall formed in 1982 with Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals) and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums)–all of German descent. They were united by musical sensibilities that combined electronic and traditional instruments developing the basis for their 1982 demo recordings. By chance Patrick Codenys of the Belgian electro pioneers FRONT 242 heard two songs and decided to record a 4-song EP for the electro band’s newly formed label MASK. The Heute EP was released in 1983 after a week of recording in Front’s private studio under the direction of sound-whiz Daniel B. Bearing in mind MIDI had not been invented at the time, the recording involved some extensive sound sculpting including the use of individual synths (PPG Wave, Syrinx, Roland System 100, etc.) for separate drum sounds. To create an organic feel to the combination of acoustic and electric guitar, a trumpet and a bass were incorporated into the electronic arrangements.
Sonically way ahead of their time, Zwischenfall have a distinct sound with hard rhythms and melancholic melodies that blend minimal yet catchy electronics to create a very danceable production. Remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios, the EP features two bonus tracks from the Heute sessions never before released on vinyl: the uptempo “Tausend Jahre” and “Katastrophe” the demo version of Flucht. The Dark Entries’ release of Heute will include an original press kit with lyrics and band photos and is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.

DE-002 Death Domain – Ethidium Bromide 7″

Death Domain aka Adam Stroupe is a science nerd from Baltimore and, like me, wears it as a badge of honor. His sound is undoubtedly one of the most bewildering, disorienting yet magnetic and infectious slices of downright bleak takes on synth-based dance music. A one man all-live-analogue electronic ice machine (who is also behind the likes of ‘SIDS‘ – Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). His sound is as cryptically raw as it gets – summoning the seminal Industrial/EBM sounds of the likes of early Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, and The Normal. Limited to 400 silk screened, hand numbered copies with 4 different covers that feature a different glow-in-the-dark letter of each base pair of DNA: A,C,T,or G. Sound samples HERE

DE-001 Eleven Pond – Bas Relief – LP

Dark Entries Records is proud to announce the reissue of the debut album by Eleven Pond. Long sought after by collectors, the Rochester, NY band only released a single LP in their time together before dissolving into obscurity. Their sound–a merging of post punk’s dark dance and synthpop’s melodic arrangements–reflected the originality of gifted songwriters who met in art school with a shared interest in 4AD and Factory Records.
In cooperation with the band members, the entire album has been remastered from the original 2-track analogue masters by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The recordings on this release comprise the band’s entire recorded output and the LP includes a 2009 redesign by Jeff Gallea of Eleven Pond: 11×11 cardstock lyrics/artwork sheet, 2 Eleven Pond postcards and 1 Dark Entries Sticker. Eleven Pond officially parted ways in 1987 but nearly a quarter-century later these recordings prove how vital they remain.

– Charles Lindbergh N.E.V. – mal glucken, ob’s klappt… – 7″
Another nice little record from Schallplatten Aus Lurup, the side label from NLW. Although these songs were recorded live in 2007 at the Kernkrach Festival they are originally from the 80′s. These live recordings show the great lo-fi electronic diy attitude of this act. Maybe the singing is out of tune at times but it is simply excellent dada synth-pop.

Duo – Untitled 7″
Duo!!! was Kai A. Knipper (lyrics) and Matthias Klein (music) from Berlin, who recorded these lovely Casio-pop tunes in 1986-87, on a cassette recorder in their living room. As for Casio-pop, it is understood that this is not really synthesiser stuff, but made with these cheap little keyboards for kids with their very own, strangely enough, very melancholic sound. Duo!!!’s tracks are just wonderful, and for those who love this sound, the melancholy, the ultra diy and lo-fi sound and some weirdness, simply a must ! Come in lilac-brownish vinyl, with crazy photo and limited to 150 copies only.

Wermut – Ether 2xLP
After four years of intense cosmic labour, here comes full-length number five from the prog-electro duo, now turned trio with multi-instrumentalist NIEDOWIERZANIE joining forces, and assisted by guest drummer FALKO GRAU. The four long trance inducing Berlin-school influenced psychedelic pieces will take you on an 85 minutes long journey to the fountain of life. This new opus is without a doubt the band’s most traditionalist work to date, reflecting on the quintessence, the doctrine of the five elements, the cycles, the holy mountain, the world tree and what has been the bands most recurring symbolic interest: the heart of the world. Some “Tomhetian” melodies here, a hint of Southern Rock à la EARTH and Post-Rock à la GYBE there, a soupcon of 80s minimal wave romanticism and a bit of Cascadian feeling combined with loads of pulsating analogue sequencing in the style of ASH RA TEMPEL, TANGERINE DREAM and TIM BLAKE. Double LP comes in gatefold sleeve and is limited to 310 hand-numbered copies!

Kuruki – TV Scape LP
With their first single “Crocodile Tears” they almost conquered the world, but they rather maintained their personality & their credibility than to repeat the same old trick endlessly. The past 30 years Kuruki’s first and only full LP “TV Scape” could only be found in the record collection of collectors with a preference for minimal synth & synth-pop. Kuruki was a Belgian minimal synth-pop band project spearheaded by Ghent-based musician Gerry D’Haeyer and Alain Bureau. The band was founded early 1980’s and shortly after it’s conception a first release was recorded. The single “Crocodile tears” immediately hit the charts and became a hit. Afterward the band released 12 inches including maxi single “Such a liar”. After intensive touring a new single “Just a cat” was spawned in 1983. As a live band at that time Alan Gevaert, from dEUS, and Chris Whitley joined them. Live, Kuruki put down a mysterious act, with a lot of colour & show elements. In 1984 The final release Tv Scape, a full LP, was released. On this record the last pieces of the puzzle fitted together. On an accurately crafted structure of frivolous minimal electronics Sally Joy & Monsieur Tic sang about an era wherein alienation & mass consumption are an everyday routine & television offers the ideal escape. Released in an edition of 500 LPs

The Misz – Eddy Merckz LP
Beside the usual noise- and experimental-projects there were also great new-wave-bands like The Misz. Eddy Merckz is a good example for the extreme high quality of the 80′s Belgian cassette-culture-scene. Their very catchy sound is comparable to early Virgin Prunes with some more pop-appeal; fine harmonies and male/female singer made this band to remarkable milestone in European new-wave, although they unfortunately never reached a bigger audience. Released in an edition of 300 LPs. Includes a double sided insert.

Aimless Device – Coats Of Many Colours CD
IFounded by Bart Azijn (words), guitarist Patric M (guitars) and the enigmatic Edgar on synths, Aimless Device was a Leuven-based band that, between 1985 and 1989, coupled a synth- and drum machines-driven sound with bona fide rock guitars. Their first mini-album, ‘Hard To Be Nice’ (1985) was a modest success, and with ‘World Of Coats’ (1986) and ‘Dog Days’ (1987), the band toured Germany, France and Spain. After the release of the ‘Mud In Your Eye’ EP (1988), though, the band threw in the towel when their record label folded. The ‘Coats Of Many Colours’ CD includes all officially released material and two bonuses: Bad Times Ahead, a track that first appeared on the compilation-LP ‘From Behind The Bushes’ and Cry, one of the last songs the band recorded.

Kebab We Live in a System 12″ LP
SoftSpot has delved back into the post-punk archives and unearthed another virtually unheard gem. Our first full-length LP features the recordings of Kebab, a short-lived quartet of punk-minded Belgian youths. Inspired by the Crass Records DIY mentality, the burgeoning UK art-punk scene, and their own boredom, Kebab combined anti-political punk diatribes with sharp guitars, plodding basslines, synth gurgles, and spastic electronic percussion. The result is an aggressively sparse take on post-punk that remains fresh and visceral sounding today. Led Er Est hailing from Brooklyn are one of the leaders of the new cold wave and minimal synth scene, signed to scene leaders Wierd Records and recently released their ‘Dust On Common’ album which could have quite happily been released on Mute in 1979 alongside Fad Gadget and The Normal. Cheap drum machines and synths hammer away relentlessly forming a post-industrial soundscape for sombre yet emotive vocals. Ancien Régime hailing from Rome, moving closer to the spirit of the 80s new wave, the band’s sound incorporates influences from ’80s dark wave music and modern indie-alternative rock. They recorded from 1981 to 1985 and issued three incredibly rare demo tapes. “A Better Spider” compiles the best tracks from those tapes, bringing you some of the best electropop/electrowave music ever coming out of Italy.

Avida – Il Grillo E La Formica EP
The Avida project was initiated by Maurizio Dami (aka Alexander Robotnick) in 1981 and featured: Stefano Fuochi (synths) Daniele Trambusti (drums and recording) and Stefania Talini (visuals). Avida mixes a crude electro-existential style with witty nonsense lyrics and pure minimal electro music, an appealing mix of trash and humour. In the early 80s Florence was blooming with top level creativity throughout all fields ( theatre, fashion, design and music). Avida perfectly fit in with a kind of underground music that was getting all the rage. Maurizio Dami s vocals were inspired on early 60s Italian singers (to carry on and close the typical 20 years cycle of revivals), such as Edoardo Vianello.

Galaxy Toobin Gang – Galaxy Toobin’ LP
The cold and beautiful synths of Galaxy Toobin’ Gang are transmitted through the same feeric wave-spaces as those of Laurie Spiegel, Terry Riley or Tangerine Dream and convey perfectly the sensation of simultaneous wonder and alienation that the members of the Peabody expedition must have felt when flying between the abnormally regular shapes of a monstrous mountain range hidden deep into the heart of a eternal screaming whiteness. Galaxy Toobin’ Gang’s debut album is a truly timeless sounding piece of work created by Elliot Lipp and Speculator.
