We are excited to announce the release of the debut album by UK duo LINEA ASPERA, due September 25, 2012.

Dark Entries is proud to present the debut album of contemporary British band Linea Aspera. Linea Aspera is the London duo of Ryan Ambridge (Synths/Programming) and Alison Lewis (Vocals/Synths). They began the project in November 2011, technically drawing inspiration from electronic music from the early 1980s. Within the duo, Alison writes and performs all vocal elements, while Ryan is responsible for the writing and performing of the electronics, as well as recording and mixing of the final recordings.
For their debut album they utilized small, simple analog synthesizer set up: Roland SH-09, Roland Juno 6, Vermona DRM MKiii, Korg Poly 800 and Analogue Solutions Semblance. Linea Aspera’s sound includes clear influences from early electronic body music, classic synth-pop and, in some instances, industrial and noise. Lyrically the band incorporates the sciences of osteology, neuroscience, and anthropology weaving a new medical language around themes of desire, despair and renewal. Linea Aspera serve up an icebox of dark doom riding on Alison’s powerful vocals with a soft but sharp touch.
All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a specially designed jacket by Dovile Shurpo and includes a full sized insert of all lyrics.

MINIMAL SYNTH / DARK WAVE
En moins d’un an d’existence et avec juste quelques titres sur des compilations (dont Rewind + Forward : The Future Echo Tapes dont nous parlions dans notre précédent numéro) et des concerts un peu partout en Europe, Linea Aspera s’est fait une réputation solide et ce premier album va définitivement les imposer comme un des groupes minimal synth les plus intéressants du moment. Les points forts du groupe sont des mélodies accrocheuses et douces-amères, des thèmes romantiques à souhait et surtout la voix d’Alison Lewis, à la fois douce et ensorceleuse, sensuelle et glacée dans la lignée de ces déesses de la new wave synthétique qu’étaient Jayne Casey (Pink Industry) ou Brigitte Balian (Martin Dupont), même si le timbre porte une identité propre immédiatement reconnaissable. Amours déçues, problèmes relationnels, délice de la chute, attrait du froid, lancinance du vide, salvation par le rêve et le silence, le talent du duo est de mélanger des paroles introspectives à des rythmes efficaces, apportant de très légères touches EBM à une musique pourtant définitivement cold wave. Il serait difficile d’extraire un titre plus qu’un autre, tant tout ici relève du tube. Nos goûts personnels vont nous amener vers les morceaux les plus atmosphériques et désabusés (« Reunion », « Preservation Bias ») mais ne le sont-ils pas tous ? Dansant, élégant et terriblement accrocheur.

Si vous n’avez pas encore entendu parler de Linea Aspera, il s’agit de LA sensation dark du moment. En quelques mois, les Anglais Alison Lewis et Ryan Ambridge ont su séduire avec leur son désenchanté et synthétique, mélange de minimal synth, de cold wave et de touches EBM, sur lesquelles se posent des vocaux féminins glacés et romantiques. Ce 25 septembre, leur premier album sort sur le label Dark Entries, et va vite devenir culte tant chaque titre sonne déjà comme un classique pour réunions de corbeaux. Alors que le duo commence à se produire sur toutes les scènes d’Europe et avant qu’ils aillent conquérir les États-Unis, un petit échange avec cette jeunesse de glace s’imposait.

Linea Aspera est votre premier projet ?
Cela fait pas mal d’années que nous faisons de la musique mais Linea Aspera est le premier groupe avec lequel nous avons enregistré un album et sommes partis en tournée.

Qu’appréciez-vous dans ces sons minimaux électroniques et dépouillés ?
C’est facile à faire, et dès que tu as un bon son de synthé, il n’est pas nécessaire de le creuser. C’est ce qui nous convenait le mieux.

Votre son et votre esthétique partagent des liens évidents avec la cold wave. En quoi pensez-vous que ce son est adapté à notre contemporanéité ?
Les gens n’arrêteront jamais de ressentir le froid.

Votre premier album est-il plus à voir comme un condensé de vos meilleurs morceaux depuis que vous avez commencé le projet l’année dernière ?
Nous ne nous attendions pas à enregistrer un album complet, donc dans ce sens il s’agit plus d’une collection de morceaux, incluant le tout premier titre que nous ayons écrit (« Preservation Bias »). Cela dit, nous les avons sélectionnés en accord avec un son cohérent. Nous avons d’autres morceaux que nous jouons sur scène qui sont tout aussi bons mais qui ne collaient pas avec les autres, donc ils sont sortis sur format cassette.

Vous tirez votre inspiration d’où en général ?
La minimal synth et l’electronic body music des débuts, entre autres.

Ce mélange dé mélancolie et de rythmes dansants rend votre musique très hypnotique.
Beaucoup de personnes nous disent que ce que nous faisons est très mélancolique mais nous ne sommes pas d’accord. Pour nous, c’est émotionnel dans un sens plus positif et optimiste. Mais les textes s’adressent en effet à l’essence de ce qu’on peut appeler l « âme ».

Vos ambitions ?
Il n’y a pas de plan spécifique, si ce n’est la sortie de ce disque et un petit voyage outre-Atlantique.

In less than a year old and with just a few tracks on compilations (including + Rewind Forward: The Future Echo Tapes we talked about in our last issue) and concerts all over Europe, Linea Aspera has been a solid reputation and this first album is definitely going to emerge as a minimal synth group’s most interesting moment. The strengths of the group are catchy melodies and bittersweet, romantic themes to perfection especially the voice of Alison Lewis, both sweet and captivating, sensual and ice in the line of those goddesses that new wave synthetic ‘were Jayne Casey (Pink Industry) or Brigitte Balian (Martin Dupont), even if the stamp is an identity instantly recognizable. Disappointed love, relationship problems, loss of delight, attractiveness cold lancinance vacuum, salvation through dreams and silence, the talent of the duo is to mix words introspective rhythms effective, bringing very light touches to EBM But music definitely cold wave. It is difficult to extract a title over another, as everything here is the tube. Our personal tastes will bring us to the most atmospheric pieces and disillusioned (“Reunion”, “Preservation Bias”) but are not they all? Dancing, elegant and grippy.

If you have not heard of Linea Aspera, it is THE dark sensation of the moment. In a few months, the English Alison Lewis and Ryan Ambridge have attracted disenchanted with their sound and synthetic mixture of minimal synth, cold wave and EBM keys, which arise out of the icy female vocals and romantic. This September 25, their first album released on the label Dark Entries, and will quickly become worship as each title already sounds like a classic meeting of crows. While the duo began performing on stages in Europe and before they go to conquer the United States, a small exchange with the youth ice required.

Is Linea Aspera your first project?
This is quite a few years we make music but Linea Aspera is the first group that we recorded an album and went on tour.

What do you like about minimal electronic sounds?
It’s easy to do and once you have a good synth sound, it is not necessary to dig. This is what suited us best.

Your sound shares your aesthetic and obvious links with the cold wave. Why do you think this sound is adapting to our contemporary musical climate?
People will never stop feeling the cold.

Is your first album seen more as a collection of your best songs since you started the project last year?
We do not expect to record a full album, so in that sense it is more a collection of songs, including the first title we wrote (“Preservation Bias”). That said, we have selected in accordance with a cohesive sound. We have other songs that we play on stage are just as good but did not fit with the others, so they came out on cassette format.

You draw your inspiration from where in general?
The minimal synth and electronic body music debut, among others.

This mixture of melancholy and dance rhythms makes your music very hypnotic.
Many people tell us that what we do is very sad but we do not agree. For us, it is emotional in a more positive and optimistic. But the texts are addressed to effect the essence of what we may call the “soul.”

Your ambitions?
There is no specific plan, if it is out of the disc and a trip overseas.
