The prince of New Orleans Bouffant Bouffant returns to Chinotto Records for an EP! Baeleric Bayou begins with a new two-parter and finishes with a pair of remixes of the tracks released as Tarocco Singles Club No. 1 last December: “Katey’s Rain,” which celebrates a hometown hero, and “Thinking Talking,”which pays tribute to a creation-as-meditation practice used by Arthur Russell, whose influence is also felt gently on these new songs.
Baeleric Bayou starts off like one of Bouffant Bouffant’s monthly Gimme A Reason parties—a little bit psychedelic, a little bit balearic—before growing into a lovable spacey groove. Its sibling picks up the pace in part two, adding the type of percussion that Bouffant Bouffant is known for as it buiilds to a swell of big fun.
For the remixes: Justin Strauss is a bonafide New York legend and multihyphenate whose early works led to the remix as we know it. Dive in the pool with Justin’s hypnotic beats and huge synths! To close things, Chinotto founder Whitney Weiss takes “Thinking Talking” on an eight minute club journey with swirly vocals that stay true to the original’s soul.
